Eighth Grade Assignments
8th Grade DOES NOT have to complete a project this year. However, they may complete a project for extra points if needed.

Due to students not having to complete projects this year, I require more written work for class/homework. Please make sure you keep a check on your child's work to make sure they are completing and turning in all assignments.

Rules for make-up work and info to be included on EACH assignment.
Make-Up work is YOUR responsibility!! Always check make-up folder if you are absent. Ask your classmate NOT me what you missed. If you are told you must complete a worksheet/study guide or any other assignment in which I handed out something then it should be in the make-up folder!!!! If you need something and I neglected to place it in the folder then and ONLY THEN may you come to me to receive your needed material. DO NOT ASK ME UNTIL YOU HAVE FOLLOWED THIS PROCEDURE!!!!!
If I have not given you the needed sheet and you have asked for it MANY times then I will take responsibility for you not completing the assignment. BUT if you don’t follow my procedure and you don’t complete the assignment then I will average a zero in for the missing assignment. No late make-up work and NO extra points are available unless every student has the same opportunities.

The following information must be on each assignment in the top right hand corner:
1st-last name
Date Due—AND--(Date Turned in.—If make-up)
Title of Assignment

Science Project Topics to Avoid  & Why
Any topic that boils down to a simple preference or taste comparison. For example, "Which tastes better: Coke or Pepsi?" Such experiments don't involve the kinds of numerical measurements we want in a science fair project. They are more of a survey than an experiment.

Most consumer product testing of the "Which is best?" type. This includes comparisons of popcorn, bubblegum, make-up, detergents, cleaning products, and paper towels. These projects only have scientific validity if the Investigator fully understands the science behind why the product works and applies that understanding to the experiment. While many consumer products are easy to use, the science behind them is often at the level of a graduate student in college.

Any topic that requires people to recall things they did in the past. The data tends to be unreliable.

Effect of colored light on plants  Several people do this project at almost every science fair. You can be more creative!
Effect of music or talking on plants Difficult to measure.

Effect of running, music, video games, or almost anything on blood pressure The result is either obvious (the heart beats faster when you run) or difficult to measure with proper controls (the effect of music).

Effect of color on memory, emotion, mood, taste, strength, etc. Highly subjective and difficult to measure.
Any topic that requires measurements that will be extremely difficult to make or repeat, given your equipment. Without measurement, you can't do science.

Graphology or handwriting analysis Questionable scientific validity.

Astrology or ESP No scientific validity.

Any topic that requires dangerous, hard to find, expensive, or illegal materials.  Violates the rules of virtually any science fair.
Any topic that requires drugging, pain, or injury to a live vertebrate animal.  Violates the rules of virtually any science fair.
Any topic that creates unacceptable risk (physical or psychological) to a human subject.  Violates the rules of virtually any science fair.

Any topic that involves collection of tissue samples from living humans or vertebrate animals.  Violates the rules of virtually any science fair.

Science Project Grade Sheets

Projects #1
Back Drop Evaluation
NO STAPLES! NO TAPE THAT CAN BE SEEN! NO GLUE THAT CREATES A WRINKLED MESS. I RECOMMEND “RUBBER CEMENT” BUT IT IS NOT REQUIRED! A GLUE STICK WILL NOT MAKE A WRINKLED MESS.DO NOT hand write ANYTHING directly on to the board. UNLESS, you hand write it on a separate sheet of paper and then place it on the board. Everything MUST be NEAT & SPELLED CORRECTLY! If you need any material to complete your project ask me. If I have it and you need it I will try to make sure you have the needed material.
1. _____ (10pts.) Header: Title of the project is neat readable and spelled correctly. NO hand written letters. I will give you an opportunity to stay after school one day and use the die-cut machine if you need too.
2. ______Question: (20 pts) The question is located in the TOP LEFT corner on the flap on the backdrop. The question has a measuring word, stated clearly and is spelled correctly.
3. ______ Hypothesis: (20 pts) The hypothesis is stated in an IF……..THEN statement. Place the hypothesis in the bottom left corner on the flap of the backboard.
4. ______Experiment: (70 pts.) The experiment must be explained in STEP-BY-STEP details so that someone else could repeat your experiment. You MUST have pictures of “yourself” doing the experiment. DO NOT show your face in the pictures! The description of the experiment should be placed on the back/middle part of the backboard. Information to prove your research/experiment should be included on the back. You may include pictures from the Internet to explain the project. Make sure the web site is included in your bibliography and placed on the bottom of each picture. DO NOT place materials on back board! A copy of resources MUST be turned in with your research.
5. ______ (20 Pts) Variables should be on your backboard.
6. _____ Results: (20 pts) The results should be stated clearly, use graphs, pictures or logs to explain the data observed during your experiment. The results should be placed on top of the right flap on the backdrop.
7. _____ Conclusion: (10 pts) This should be placed on the right flap of the board at the bottom. Your conclusion must include a brief statement explaining why you accepted or rejected your hypothesis and what you learned by doing the project.
8. _____ Model: (100 pts) Your model must be labeled with all information that applies to your project. It MUST include more information than just an object sitting in front of your board without any explanation to justify its use in the project! 9. _____Neatness: (30 pts.) Did you write neatly and spell everything correctly? Did you cut neatly? Did you use construction paper or other material to decorate your backdrop? Did you use glue that doesn’t show or mess up the paper? Writing is either hand-written OR typed NOT BOTH. Did you have all your materials ready? Did you follow instructions? There is evidence that thought, study and effort went in to this project. This is a WHOLE YEAR worth of homework points. Do you deserve all of the 700 points or did you throw something together at the last minute? Is this an original idea? Have you shown use of imagination to demonstrate your concept? Did you include all required parts to the project? Did you place the information in the correct place on the board?
10. ______ (100 pts.) Rough draft turned in on time and is in YOUR handwriting. If I do NOT see a rough draft in YOUR handwriting then I WILL NOT grade the project.

SCIENCE PROJECT RESEARCH

Once you have chosen your science problem, it is important to research the written materials available on your subject. By finding out as much background information as you can about your subject, you will gain a better understanding of your problem. This will be valuable to you as you plan your project.
DO NOT PUT YOUR RESEARCH IN THE PLASTIC SLEEVES!
Please use this sheet to check off your work as you complete each step. It is easy to make a good grade if you follow this sheet.
1. _____ (10 Pts) (PAGE 1) This is your title page. It should contain your title, your name, and the date of your project.
2. _____ (5pts) (Page 2) This page should be your table of contents. Listed as follows:• Question• Hypothesis• Research• Experiment• Results• Conclusion• Bibliography
3. _____  (40 Pts) (Page 3) This should be the question you are trying to answer.“Which fertilizer will make the plant the tallest?”Second half of the page should contain your hypothesis.“If I use Miracle Grow fertilizer, then it will grow the tallest plant.”(Board & Research)
4. ______  (100 Pts)(Page 4) This page will begin your research. Your research must be at least 3 typed pages or 6 handwritten pages long. It can be longer. The length of your research will depend on your subject and how well you research the subject. DO NOT CUT & PASTE THE INFORMATION!!!  Spelling is correct. A copy of the resources MUST be turned in with the research.Size 14 Font (Ariel only) for research section of the project.
5. _______ (30 Pts) Pictures of student actually completing the project) DO NOT SHOW FACES! (Board & Research)
6. _______ (40 Pts) Step by Step Instructions-This explains how you did your project so that someone else could repeat your project exactly as you did it. (Board & Research)
7. ______   (15 pts) Graphs, charts AND/OR pictures (These pictures are one you may find on the Internet to help explain your project.) are included in the project. (Board & Research)
8. ______  (10Pts) Independent variables, (Board & Research)
9. ______   (10Pts) Dependent variables, (Board & Research)
10.  ______  (10Pts)  Constant variables  (Board & Research)
11. _______  (5 Pts) Control (If needed).  (Board & Research)
12. _______ (15 pts) Specific Materials List-Item-Type-Brand-Amount! Material list should be in the research paper ONLY. Do NOT place it on the board.
13. ________(50 Pts) Explain your results. Use graphs, pictures, or logs and a paragraph explanation of your results. (Board & Research)
14. ______  (20 Pts) The next page will be your conclusion. Did you accept or reject your hypothesis? WHY??? What did you learn by doing this project? (Board & Research)
15. ______ (10 Pts) The last page is your Bibliography. You have a sheet in your notebook to explain exactly how to write a bibliography. MAKE SURE YOU USE IT! If is has something underlined then you underline the same part of your information. If you check for periods, commas underlined words and follow the form you can’t go wrong.
16. ______  (20 Pts) Three different resources must be used for your research. Only ONE may be an Encyclopedia. (Copy of resources must be turned in.)
17.  _____You must turn in a rough draft of your paper. This is the garbage you normally throw away. I must have it if you type your project. If you don’t have a rough draft in YOUR handwriting and you have typed your project I will NOT grade the project it will be a zero. If you hand write the project in YOUR handwriting then you will lose the points for not having a rough draft but I will still grade the project. (100 points)A final draft must be written in neat form. (It may be typed BUT it is not required.) 3 typed pages OR 6 handwritten pages. Research information should be in size 14 Ariel font ONLY.
